I tend to roll my eyes at a lot of the things Snowden says, but he’s on target with both of these things. If Dick Cheney, who did everything he could to turn the United States into a dictatorship, thinks you’re a traitor… you’re probably doing something right. And yes, we have definitely sacrificed an awful lot of freedom for the cause of avoiding a very tiny problem.

Drum (commenting on an Dan Drezner column in Foreign Policy):
“In a nutshell, the idea here is that we want both sides to be evenly matched so the fighting continues as long as possible. That will weaken pretty much everyone we hate: Assad, Hezbollah, Iran, and the Al Qaeda groups among the rebels. As long as these folks continue killing each other, we’re happy.
“Is it a sign of terminal naiveté that I find myself unable to believe that this is conscious Obama administration policy? Or has Drezner simply been watching too much Game of Thrones?”
It’s not just you. This whole Obama-plays-11-dimensional-chess thing is just getting old. In fact, I think it’s most likely that the administration sees no good course of action here, and is just trying to show that it’s “doing something” about the Syria problem. The idea that Obama is deliberately prolonging a tremendously destabilizing war in this vital region, because it’s somehow good for the US… let’s say I find it impossible to swallow.
